According to Ayurveda the Universe is composed of Five Basic Elements
called Pancha Mahabhoothas.
The five elements are: Space or Akasha, Air or Vayu, Fire or Tejas,
Water or Apa, Earth or Prithvi. These five elements can be seen to
exist in the universe in both organic and inorganic matter.
The five elements are coded into three biological forces which govern
all life processes. These three forces are the Doshas (Vatha, pitha &
kapha), Dhathus (seven basic Tissues) and Malas (waste materials).

Vatha dosha has the mobility and quickness of space and air; Pitha dosha
the metabolic qualities of fire and water; Kapha dosha the stability and
solidity of water and earth. The Tridoshas regulates every physiological
and psychological process in the living organism. The Dhathus or Tissues
supports the body functions and Malas which contaminates the body. A
Harmonious state of these forces creates Balance and health. An
imbalance, manifests as a sign or symptom of disease. Balancing these
elements in just the right way for each unique individual is the key to
maintaining health.
